Michael Draine's Twisted Vista
Weidorje
Weidorje
(Musea)
Upon leaving Magma in 1976, bassist Bernard
Paganotti and ex-Heldon keyboardist Patrick
Gauthier formed Weidorje to extend the
school of Wagnerian jazz-rock dubbed
“Zeuhl music” by Magma founder Christian
Vander. Though Weidorje’s sole
album lacks the scope of Magma’s
MDK or Kohntarkosz, Weidorje
comes closer to the heart and power of
Magma than any other group. The issue
of originality becomes irrelevant in the
face of the inspiring vitality and passion
of Weidorje’s music. Paganotti and
Yvon Guillard adhere to the soulful,
soaring vocal style Klaus Blasquiz
developed for Magma, while wisely
never reaching for their predecessor’s
operatic extremes. Blasquiz was Weidorje’s
first choice as vocalist, but sessions began
without him due to the group’s mistaken
impression that he was committed to
staying with Magma. Paganotti’s growling Music Review Index
bass lays the foundation upon which
the septet (bass, drums, two keyboards,
guitar, sax, and trumpet) construct
their simultaneously martial and Twisted Cinema
spiritual songs. Surges of Ligetti-like choral
chromaticism invest the 16-minute
“Eloheim’s Voyage” with an eerie,
unearthly air. Two previously unreleased
live tracks from 1978 display Weidorje’s
strength, unity and confidence, rendering
rendering all the more regrettable the
brevity of a group which held the promise
of becoming a major force in French
rock.
